Tips for Writing a Better Busser Resume
Find relevance in your non-bussing experience
Your background may include only partly related jobs such as cashier, carhop, or fast-food worker. How to manage those jobs on your busser resume? Follow these three steps:
1. Write down your job goals
You can do this step right now. Get out a piece of paper or whatever notes app you use on your phone. Jot down a few notes on the type of busser job you’re seeking. You might specify a type of cuisine, work environment, or dining facility (small local restaurant, large cafeteria).
2. Brainstorm details on ALL your work experience
In one document, write down everything you can think of for both your busser and non-busser jobs so far. Don’t worry about organizing your details by relevance or other criteria. (If this step seems too open-ended, focus on work details you’re proud of or view as a positive.) Consider making this “master” document accessible from your phone. That way, you can easily keep adding details as you think of them or whenever you have a spare moment.
3. Filter out irrelevant details
Now you’re in the best position to start drafting your resume for a busser job (or any other job, for that matter). First, save a copy of your master document. Then read through it and delete any jobs or duties that don’t overlap with your target role. For example, say your past jobs include working at a fast-food restaurant. Under that job, you may have written down details about preparing fast-food orders. But what if your target busser role doesn’t include any food preparation? Delete those food prep details but leave in any other information you wrote about the fast food job’s more relevant, customer service side. Use dynamic verb phrases
As someone in the service industry, you likely have great interpersonal skills (or “soft skills”) like collaboration and communication. But when you refer to these skills using an adjective or noun phrase like “Highly collaborative” or “Strong collaboration skills,” they won’t stand out to hiring managers. That’s because (a) they’re pretty vague by themselves, and (b) countless other jobseekers use these phrases on their own resumes, both in and outside the service industry.
To get around this problem, convert each soft skill into a verb phrase (like “Collaborate with…”) when possible – this allows you to flesh out the idea with more specific and interesting details.

Spell out your results
Each of your duties helps your dining facility succeed in the short and long term. Speak to that broader impact in your job descriptions, and you’ll give your resume a big boost.
If you can’t recall examples or data to quantify a work area, that doesn’t mean you have to word it as a basic duty. You can always state the duty’s general, intended result, or value. Try simply adding the phrase “in order to” at the end of the duty statement, then jotting down whatever general purposes or outcomes you think of (and then delete “in order” from your final resume for brevity). You might be surprised how much stronger the revised statement is – just as important, it’s a more accurate account of your work’s positive impact.
